Clay Architexture is about using ceramic art in an exploration of form and surface- the ambiguity of form as object - object as form and pushing the boundaries of functionalism and art. With a wide range of influences from architecture to nature, my intent is to create objects that speak with the vocabulary of man and nature, machine and craft, Zen simplicity and rich complexity. My hope is that my objects engage the mind as well as the heart.
David’s recent focus has been on the vase as a vessel/container and sculptural form. But, now he is creating other forms including bowls, pitchers, plates and lamps, and continues to develop new glazes, materials and techniques.
About David:
David Lloyd Warren has been in design-related businesses for over 25 years. Starting as an architectural illustrator and later shifting to graphic design, he founded his own design firm in 1978 and won over 100 design awards throughout the years. His design work has been published in numerous national and international design books and magazines.
In January 2000, David began studying ceramics, attending classes and workshops to expand his knowledge and technique while incorporating his extensive design background. "I love the creative process," David said "and clay is a perfect medium for exploring form and craft. I realized my strength is really in 3-d, not 2-d forms and I love the challenge of making that transition. Good design is relevant regardless of the medium or dimension. Clay also allows me the ability to realize the potential success of a form quicker than other mediums."
In the fall of 2002, David moved to Taos, New Mexico with his artist wife Joyce and dogs Walter and Phoebe. He and Joyce designed their house and studios, incorporating the views and spectacular light of Taos. "We love it here. I think one of my biggest successes is being able to do what brings me joy and share it with others."
